Speech: Off-Shore Fish Farms: Moorings design and maintenance

It is vital to configure the design of all mooring system components in function of both the prevailing and extreme hydrographical site conditions.

The mooring system needs not only to resist the extreme marine forces: It must also possess an adequate degree of flexibility. An overly “stiff” system amplifies the instantaneous loads transmitted to the cage flotation collars and to the nets, which may cause unexpected damages.

We examine some solutions applied at different sites, with emphasis on the regulation and fine-tuning of the components, coupled with corresponding inspection and maintenance protocols.

A key to success in high-energy mariculture is to dissipate evenly the strains from the mooring lines to the overall cage structure.
