Session: CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE: A HUB FOR FRESHWATER AQUACULTURE – COMMERCE, COMMUNICATION, CONSUMPTION

Speech: Regional trade overview and consumer perceptions

Aquaculture production of freshwater species amounted to 287 00 tonnes in the EU, increasing 7% compared to 2012. Rainbow trout and Common carp are the main produced species with an output of 157 000 tonnes and 73 000 tonnes in 2016. While aquaculture production of Rainbow trout has been stable from 2012 to 2016, production of Common carp increased 8%. Along with increasing production, the EU import of Rainbow trout products has been on the rise surpassing 114 000 tonnes in 2017. While the EU import of carp products is lower in volume compared to trout, it increased 95% in the similar period, reaching 20 000 tonnes in 2017. In the view of increasing production and trade, public perception of aquaculture products becomes crucial in formation of consumer demand. Public perceptions of aquaculture products is based on many factors, but the importance given to those features can differ, depending on personal level of knowledge, background, interest, etc.
