I ricci di mare in acquacoltura: criticità e potenzialità

In Europe sea urchin gonads “roe” is a valuable sea food product. As results of the long term harvesting most of the sea urchin wild stocks are overfished and next to “Stock collapse”. Aquaculture of sea urchins could represent an useful practice both for species preservation and the technological development for aquaculture companies (SMEs), as well as to fill the gap between market supply and demand of sea urchins. In the last 10 years aquaculture of sea urchins has affected Australia, Canada, Chile, New Zealand, Norway, the United States, and more recently Europe with some projects financed by FP6 and FP7 scheme. Here we presented the results of the FP7-European project RESURCH which was addressed to improve the economic profitability and environmental sustainability of the farming of the purple sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus.
