Aquaculture is growing and along with it a continually increasing demand for feed, as well as access to ingredients to produce that feed. Much media attention has been given to alternative and novel ingredients recently, and there is a common message about the replacement of fishmeal and fish oil in farmed fish diets. Whilst it is true that additional volume of supply of ingredients is required, the use of fishmeal and fish oil in aquafeeds is secure by virtue of their highly-valued nutritional contributions. For the large part alternatives do not have the same nutritional profile as fishmeal and fish oil, and the important point is to use the materials as complementary to other ingredients, realising the nutritional benefits at key parts of the production cycle.
