Integrazione completa di un sistema acquaponico per la produzione locale e sostenibile di alimenti

Aquaponic system or Integrated Aquaculture System (IAS) consist in a “virtuous” biological loop that rely on: a) the bacteria nitrification of fish excreted ammonia (or resulting from uneaten feed and faeces) into nitrite and nitrate; b) the plant absorption and use of nitrate for their growth and production (leaves and fruits) c) the re-use of the “purified” water, back for fish rearing. In practice, an IAS allows to obtain from one input (feed) only, two different crops (fish and plant products). Advantages of this system can be briefly summarized in a very low carbon footprint and high “sustainability rate”.

The IAS sustainability may be further increased by replacing a part of commercial feed used for the fish with insects (high quality protein food) that could be grown locally using plant wastes.

The concept above described will be briefly discussed.
