The contributions of the AdriAquaNet project to the health management of fish farms and to the improvement of the quality of fish products

AdriAquaNet Project
We have reached the final phase of the Interreg AdriAquaNet project, which has involved over 100 collaborators for more than three years, including researchers and producers of companies, farms and research centers, in order to improve the competitiveness and environmental sustainability of Italian and Croatian mariculture. The project is structured in three main areas: a. development of innovative solutions for the breeding and nutrition of sea bass and sea bream and new systems for saving energy in production plants; b. improvement of the health management of farms through the development of new autogenous farm based vaccines and therapies based on natural products; c. evaluation of the sensory and hygienic-sanitary quality of the new proposals of final products and marketing surveys to evaluate the perception of consumers towards the sustainable farmed fish and new products obtained from the two fish species.

AdriAquaNet is a complex project but also unique in the area, as it undertakes to transfer, through various training courses, advanced knowledge and new technologies to the entire mariculture supply chain – from the management of production plants to the market for processed fish products – for promoting the environmental sustainability of fish farms, safeguarding the welfare of farmed fish and, at the same time, providing safe products capable of meeting consumer expectations. With this in mind, two training workshops dedicated to operators, technicians, breeders and veterinarians have also been developed and are included in the AQUAFARM 2022 program concerning two major thematic areas such as health and the quality of fish products.Participation in both workshops is free of charge and is recognized as an API training activity.

All participants of both workshops will receive the relevant certification. In addition, the workshops are accredited and provide 1.4 CME credits for the Veterinary Medicine profession (nr.ARCS 22044) in collaboration with ARCS Azienda Regione di Coordinamento per la Salute della Regione Friuli Venezia Giulia and SC Centro Regionale Formazione.

REGISTRATION
For registration it is necessary to send the completed registration form to the contact person: isabella.selleri@arcs.sanita.fvg.it, or possibly by cc to formazione@arcs.sanita.fvg.it.

Workshop 1: Health management of fish facilities

The workshop, which is aimed to reach veterinarians, biologists, animal producers, agronomists, breeders, operators in the sector, brings the contributions of the work of researchers involved in improving the health management of farms through the development of new autologous vaccines and therapies based on natural products. Vaccines against Vibrio harveyi and Tenacibaculum maritimum were developed at the Croatian Institute of Veterinary Medicine (CVI) in Zagreb and tested in sea bass, while about a hundred compounds from marine organisms were purified by the laboratories of the National Research Council (CNR) of Naples and Padua and tested for their antibacterial/immunomodulatory activity at the University of Udine. The results represent the premise to pursue patent application. At the same time, the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe) has developed a practical evaluation method to be applied in farms to monitor the well-being of fish.

Workshop 2: Quality of fish products
The workshop, which is aimed to reach veterinarians, biologists, animal producers, agronomists, breeders, operators in the sector, offers two insights presented by the researchers of the University of Udine, the result of work and collaboration between various research partners and breeders in the Italian and Croatian areas, that intersect with each other: the first intervention presents the results of the experimental tests for fish feeding on farm and useful solutions on feed in terms of cost-effectiveness, environmental impact, fish welfare and product quality. The second intervention, on the other hand, focuses on the conservation of fresh fish products and related innovations, studied together with the evaluation of the sensory and hygienic-sanitary quality of sea bass and sea bream reared at the partner companies of the project.

Both workshops are held in Italian. Participation in both workshops is recognized among the training activities of the API and all participants of both workshops will be awarded the relative certification.
