New Aquaculture Models: Integrated Multi-Trophic, Regenerative and Closed-Cycle Systems

16:00 - 17:30
MASAF Room

Traditionally, aquaculture and shellfish farming have been characterized by monospecies systems and an unstructured reliance on the external environment for waste recycling and disposal. In recent years, thanks to a deeper understanding of interactions among aquatic species—not only animals—new aquaculture models have emerged, challenging and surpassing traditional concepts.

These include: Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), where different species (fish, shellfish, crustaceans, algae) coexist and contribute not only to production but also to farm management; regenerative aquaculture, using multitrophic systems with plant species that are self-sustaining through photosynthesis and herbivorous fish; closed-cycle systems (RAS) for both freshwater and marine species; and the valorization of diadromous fish (species living in both freshwater and saltwater, such as several salmonids).
