Integrated and innovative systems for fish farminMarket opportunities and new products from a circular approach to the aquaculture sector: the enabling framework of the B-Blue project
Abstract
The valorization of the waste and discards of the aquaculture sector has a huge economic and environmental potential. Innovative high added value products for many sectors (cosmetics, farmaceutics, nutraceutics, among others) can be generated through circular economy approaches and biotech processes. Technological solutions and new processes are just part of the innovation path to successfully exploit these market opportunities. An enabling innovation ecosystem is needed to connect its quadruple helix actors and allow the proposed solutions to overcome barriers, such as legislation and market acceptance. The B-Blue project, financed by the Interreg-Med programme, is specifically working on building the enabling framework to ease the transition to a circular and sustainable aquaculture.
