Opportunity and challenges of diatoms’ cell factory
Abstract
Diatoms represent an ecologically and biogeochemically relevant microalgal group, thanks to their biological and physiological properties. This highly diversified class of species groups together species with great biotechnological interest, for example to be used as a potential “cell factory” for the synthesis of molecules with biological activity with benefits for human health. The speech by C. Brunet will draw a state-of-art of the knowledge acquired in this field of research and will discuss the challenges accompanying the appropriate development of the use of diatoms as a microalgal resource in the essential expansion of “blue biotechnologies”.
