Promoting the sustainability of fish and crop farming using circular multitrophic aquaculture: the pilot experience of the PRIMA project “SIMTAP”

Speech
A. Ciurli, M. Puccinelli, C. Bibbiani, L. Rossi and A. Pardossi: Growing microalgae and halophytes in multitrophic aquaponic systems.

Abstract
In the SIMTAP prototype, installed at the University of Pisa, microalgae and halophytes were cultured, respectively, in greenhouse effluents in low-cost photobioreactors and in the saline recirculating aquaponic system. Algae biomass can be used as feed for filter-feeding and detritivorous organisms, the plants as fresh vegetables. For algae, a stepwise methodology was applied to scale-up procedures from laboratory with six algal strains to a pilot scale by low cost big-bags photobioreactors. The SEC_LI_Chl1 strain was selected for the SIMTAP experiments. Several halophyte species were evaluated; among these, Salicornia europaea best adapted to the salinity conditions.
