Negligible risk of zoonotic parasites in fish species farmed in Europe
Along the European ParaFishControl project (GA no. 634429, 2015-2020) an extensive parasitological survey was conducted to assess the risk of zoonotic parasites in European aquaculture products. The analyses conducted on 10,587 fish from a representative number of freshwater and marine farms in Spain, Italy, Greece, Denmark, Norway and Hungary and from supermarkets in France, Italy and Spain did not show the presence of parasites pathogenic for the consumer, allowing to define the risk of zoonotic parasites in European aquaculture products as “negligible”. The procedure for the regulatory recognition of this data is underway.
