Macro and microplastics in aquaculture: environmental monitoring in the two LIFE MUCLES pilot areas
Abstract
The dispersion of plastic waste in the marine environment is a problem on a global scale. In order to mitigate the contribution related to the use of plastic gear in aquaculture, the LIFE MUSCLES project aims to recycle and find alternative materials for use in mussel farming. In this context it is necessary, however, to establish the levels of micro- and macroplastics in the two project pilot areas, the Gulf of La Spezia and the Gargano, before the implementation of the project actions, both during and after. Specifically, monitoring of beach litter, microplastics in the water column and sediment will be performed.
