Big Data in aquaculture: the GAIN Information Management System
Abstract
The development of a prototype of an information management system for the implementation of precision aquaculture was one of the main outputs of the H2020 project GAIN – Green Aquaculture Intensification in Europe. The system is made up of a centralized hub and some peripheral nodes. The first one collects and harmonizes data harvestable from web portals and data at farms, concerning both environmental variables and fish/shellfish growth and welfare. These “Big Data” are processed by the nodes using Artificial Intelligence and mechanistic models, thus sending to farmers information for improving their management decisions.
