Royer Edouard

--

AquaFarm speaker

Title: researcher

Association/Company: Università Ca’Foscari di Venezia

Biography
Edouard Royer is an engineer with experience in software, aerospace and data science. Since his first professional experience in 2006, he has held several positions in various fields from software engineer for ZodiacAerospace, technical compliance engineer for the French space agency, or quality manager for a manufacturing company in the Vicenza area. His involvement in data science started in 2016 thanks to the collaboration with Bluefarm Srl where, newly arrived in Italy, he learned how to use Earth Observation data and bioenergy models to develop new services for the aquaculture sector. From 2019 to 2022, he worked as lead data scientist for Ca’Foscari University within the H2020 GAIN project. Edouard is now a consultant for Planetek Italia Srl.

Precision Aquaculture system: real-time monitoring of oxygen supply in a trout raceway

Abstract
Within the frame of the H2020 GAIN project, the UNIVE team worked with Troticoltura Leonardi to model real-time dynamics of oxygen concentration within the raceways based on a dynamic mass-balance of oxygen concentration, a real-time and non-invasive biomass monitoring system, and a data assimilation method. Initially developed for salmon grown in cages, the biomass monitoring system was successfully tested for the first time in a trout farm. The data assimilation method was a well-known algorithm able to combine model prevision and real-time data sampling in order to dynamically adjust some parameters of the model. This lead not only to a reliable hourly forecast of oxygen concentration within the raceway but also to a dynamic estimation of biomass respiration rate. This opened the path to a smart and dynamic control of oxygen supply based on short-term or long-term variations of demand by fish, and able thus to optimize oxygen supply and environmental impact.
