The certification

Since 2021, aquaculture enterprises can obtain the “Sustainable aquaculture” certification, which will finally guarantee the recognition of sustainable and quality productions.

On February 4, 2020, Mipaaf (Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies) published the Decree recognizing the “Sustainable aquaculture” Product specification within the ” Zootechnics” National Quality System. It is the first Product specification dedicated to this sector declared compliant with EU regulations by the European Union.

An accomplishment achieved by the API (Italian Fish Farmers Association) and AMA (Mediterranean Aquaculture Farmers Association) and promoted as part of the Mipaaf-Unioncamere (Italian Union of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Crafts and Agriculture) institutional cooperation, which increases and enhances the sustainability and quality of breeding farms and related production processes. An instrument that adds value to aquaculture products and supports the companies’ competitiveness, ensuring consumers products that are environmentally, economically and socially sustainable.

Field of application

Certification applies to aquaculture species raised in accordance with the “Sustainable aquaculture” Product specification, which is an integral part of the Zootechnics National Quality System. The Certification intervenes as early as the breeding stages and also affects the marketing of the finished product.

The Certification applies to farmed fish and bivalve molluscs as well as their derived and processed products.

Affected species

WORKSHOPS

--

During Aquafarm, three workshops dedicated to sustainable aquaculture will be held.

These are information activities dedicated to all professionals, both on the broader topic of the sustainable production principles as well as on the instruments that allow companies to be distinguished for their efforts, with particular reference to the “Sustainable aquaculture” Product specification. In addition to the strictly “production” aspects, the workshop program is enriched with the “commercial” theme, in order to sensitize operators to closer supply chain relations, which can create a favorable environment for the supply chain contracts precisely envisaged in the Product specification in the “economic sustainability” context.
