Speech session
Blue Crab and invasive species: damage from predation and research status

Speech
Enhancement of the invasive alien species Callinectes sapidus (swimming crab also known as blue crab) in the coastal and transition marine areas of the Northern Adriatic

Abstract
The “blue crab” (Callinectes sapidus) currently represents one of the main threats to Italian shellfish farming and in particular to clams (Ruditapes philippinarum and Ruditapes decussatus), of which Italy is the leading European producer. Since this is a potential protein resource, both for human consumption and as a raw material for the production of meals for zootechnical use, pet food or for the extraction of chitin/chitosan, it is necessary to evaluate the possible presence of risky chemical contaminants for humans and animals and the health status of blue crab populations, a potential disease vector for other aquatic animals.
