Advancing Marine Aquaculture through Microalgae Utilization Strate
Abstract
Marine fish larvae have typically low survival at weaning due to the challenges in their nutrition and health management (e.g. pathologies). The development of new specialized products for aquaculture combining microalgae and probiotics is a valuable and sustainable tool to boost marine larviculture survival and development. VitaBloom® range uses this strategy in powder products designed to optimize green water technique, rotifers cultivation and live feed enrichment. VitaBloom® Green water was tested in meagre larviculture until weaning in comparison to green water technique with live Nannochloropsis sp. revealing adequate fish survival and reduced severe skeletal malformations. Vitabloom® Rotifers+ designed for rotifers nutrition, significantly improved rotifers growth and reproduction in batch compared with a commercial product. Vitabloom® Enrich is a live feed enrichment that was applied in Sparus aurata larviculture until weaning, showing and adequate larvae growth and development compared to a high-quality enrichment product in the market. The combination of Vitabloom® range in Sparus aurata larviculture was performed in comparison with commercial products revealing a beneficial synergistic effect in fish survival. VitaBloom® products tackled prominent aquaculture challenges through the combination of different microalgae, probiotics and water conditioners, to improve fish nutrition, prevent pathologies incidence and improve water quality.
