Biography:
Gianluca Sarà è Professore Ordinario di Ecologia dell’Università di Palermo, co-coordinatore della sezione Mare del Centro Nazionale della Biodiversità Futura (NBFC-PNRR) e componente del team italiano del CLUSTER 6 in Europa. Con oltre 30 progetti nazionali ed internazionali, esplora gli effetti della pressione umana sugli ecosistemi marini, sulla biodiversità e il funzionamento degli ecosistemi. Co-autore del libro “Ecologia” di UTET, è autore di oltre 450 articoli scientifici, di cui 210 pubblicati su riviste scientifiche di settore.

The Mediterranean blue crab hot-case and the role of biodiversity in halting its expansion

Abstract
The loss of biodiversity is accelerating due to human influence on ecosystems, and halting this trend is crucial for ecosystem functioning and human well-being. Biodiversity is a fundamental condition to ensure the sustainability of human activities and preserve economic and social balance. An emblematic example is represented by the increasing presence of the blue crabs, highly invasive alien species. Developing targeted adaptive management strategies based on ecological principles to address this threat is a top priority, as well as paying attention not only to the immediate impacts on the economy of affected sectors (e.g., fisheries and aquaculture) but above all to the long-term effects on the local biodiversity damaged by these alien species.
